TERROR Air date: Nov 26, 1967 Writer: Sidney Ellis Director: Jerry Hopper Guest Stars: Pat Culliton (Dunlap) Terror

On an island, the Seaview crew find an orchid that then fires a ray at crewman Dunlap. Dunlap then fires a gun towards Nelson and Sharkey. The orchid is put on board the Seaview and another Nelson dominated invasion of the body snatchers soon starts, yes, the plant is from deep space. Despite being nothing more than a well directed year four action/ fantasy comic book, Terror has a really nice science fiction element in it.

That alien plant. NOT the best Voyage alien but perhaps the most ... realistic. No spaceships with blinking light computers inside, no men in costumes, no talking alien, just a plant found on an island that then takes over people. Yes, that could happen. In the 21st century we are sending probes to distant worlds that are bringing back photos of worlds that look something like ... the Australian Outback. So maybe such a plant could exist? And speaking of reality ... in this episode Basehart brings such conviction to way out lines like "It comes from the outer rim of the galaxy", I can think of very few actors who can do lines like that so well, however, Whit Bissell as General Kirk in The Time Tunnel comes in second best in conviction when doing lines of that nature (Bissell was an essential element to The Time Tunnel).

Terror may of had conviction, but it was mainly action and sets in this episode ...  I am a sucker for those Seaview sets, be it be year one of year four, I sometimes go months without watching Voyage, but when I flick on a video, of maybe even a lesser episode, then I am in wonderland just looking at those blinking lights in the control room and flying sub or power core lights in the reactor room. Terror seems to make a special attempt, during the explosive action scenes, to make the control room and reactor room look more thrilling, it is all in the camera work! And while on visuals, that beam of light that goes from plant to human is very pleasing to look at.

When Star Trek did the alien plant thing it just blew dust or something on people, but this is Irwin guys, you have to make it look flashy, it is all in the presentation! Speaking of presentation, Crane makes you laugh ... Crane: "Where is the Admiral?", Crewman: "Admiral, sir?", Crane: "Yes Admiral, alien, or whatever you want to call him?". Terror concludes with Basehart making a lighthearted remark about his own "stubbornness" and how well he and Crane work together but a mild weakness in Hedison's acting range becomes obvious as Hedison seems unable to respond in the same lighthearted way.

It was a scene that could of worked really well but fell flat. But then, maybe Hedison was just having a bad day, at this stage of the series, Hedison did not want to be on Voyage. But all in all, one of my favorite episodes of year four, but still not half as good as year four's The Deadly Dolls or the Mr Pem (Henry Jones) episodes. Finally, Terror requires repeat viewing's before it will grow on you, that often happens with Irwin shows. Thank you.
