THE VI LLAGE OF GUILT - by Berne Giler
The Seaview tangles with a sea-manster, the creation of a mad scientist, that has a whole village frozen into silence.
When word comes that a sea-monster has seized and devoured a boatful of fisherman in North Sea Waters, Admiral Nelson, on the Sea'"iew recognizes from an eye-witness report that the creature must be an ordinary cephaloped, but grown to unbelievable size.
When he and his men go to investigate, they find a silent and hostile village, the eye-witness mysteriously dead, and a strange woman, Sigrid, bent on sending them away as soon as possible. Nelson and crew persist stubbornly until the Seaview divers turn up a part of a tentacle near the sunken fishing boat, proving there is a monster. Meanwhile, Sigrid is trying to persuade her husband, Mattson, to destroy the monster, for it is his creation , product of an effort to increase the world's food supply. Insanely, he refuses, and she shoots him.
Dying, he falls on a lever releasing sea-gates behind which the monster is contained -and that leaves the Seaview, hovering near, to fight off an attack by the rampaging beast. A shot of electricity from the sub's atomic reactors ultimately kill it, and the fishing village is safe once again.
