THE FEAR MAKERS -by Anthony Wilson .

Enemy agents introduce fear-gas into two of our subs in an effort to block the progress of our undersea studies .

The loss of atomic sub Polidor hits the men of the Seaview hard -many of its staff were on her.

Admiral Nelson, himself, cannot rest until he's gone down to investigate. There are official objections from a Congressional Committee, and as a concession he takes along a pair of specialists, Doctors Kenner and Davis, to study the reaction of the men to the extreme depths they will be sounding. Kenner and Davis have been doing studies in fear, especially reactions to a gas Kenner has created that induces fear reactions in animals. Davis, now revealed as an enemy agent, introduces the gas into the sub's ventilating system, then watches with satisfaction as the upset behavior of the crew threatens to abort the mission. Nelson, less affected by the gas, drives steadily downward, dangerous though the extreme depth is, until he sees the Polidor, crushed by the pressure of the deep. By this time the Seaview, itself is damaged, and while repairs are attempted, Davis learns to his horror that Kennerls gas hasnt been perfected. It turns to poison gas after a while.

In his hysteria, Davis reveals all. It was this same.gas that wrecked the judgment of the men in the Polidor. While repair work continues, Nelson resourcefully increases the heat inside the sub, so that the heated air will hold the gas at an upper level. A sweating crew completes the repairs and the sub surfaces with Davis in custody for the FBI.
